A segment is a group of contacts that are part of your community. They can be created via two distinct ways:
1 - Using dynamic filters on your contact’s attributes:
You might want to regroup some of your contacts based on which events they attended, their age, their geographical area, how much they spent on your events’ tickets etc. Dynamic filter segments allow you to do that. Simply click “filter” and select the filters you want to apply to preview a subset of your community, and save it as a segment.
💡 Every segment created this way is dynamic (it will evolve over time). Let’s say you create a segment of Parisian contacts that are subscribed to your newsletter, if a contact’s geolocation is updated to another city, s·he will be removed from this segment. On the other hand, if a Parisian contact subscribes to your newsletter, s·he will be added to this segment.

2 - Using csv import:
When importing a list of contacts to your community (via .csv file), you can automatically save them as a dedicated segment. This lets you be in full control, you can use whatever logic you want to create segment within the Smartboard. Use other provider’s data, custom excel file, you are in full control !
💡 If you re-import an existing contact in your community, it works as well: the contact will be treated and updated.
By default, Shotgun creates 2 dynamic filter segments in your community:
Recent contacts: all contacts that were added to your community in the past 30 days. You might want to send them a friendly welcome newsletter for example 🐣Top buyers: all contacts that spent more than 100€ on your event’s tickets. You might want to thank them, as they really love you ☺️
Those are just ideas for you to play with the feature, feel free to create new segments that suit your needs!
What can i do with a segment?
For now, you can:
- 📊 See how many contacts are within a segment (which helps you get a sense of volume in your community)
- 🔍 See the list of contacts in this segment (with their attribute)
- 📂 Export this contact list via csv (with their attributes)
- ✉️ Send a mail campaign to all contacts in this segment
